What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is a traditional Jyotish timing framework. “Vimshottari” means 120 in Sanskrit — the system operates on a 120-year cycle that assigns periods to the 9 grahas in a fixed sequence. Practitioners interpret those periods symbolically; the system is not a reliable forecast of life events.

“The starting period and balance are calculated from the Moon's position within its birth nakshatra. The resulting timeline is part of a traditional interpretive system, not a guarantee about what will happen.”

The Moon nakshatra at birth determines which planet's Dasha you begin life in. From there, the planets follow in their fixed Vimshottari order. Each Mahadasha is further divided into 9 Antardashas (sub-periods), which are themselves divided into Pratyantar Dashas.

Why Birth Time Accuracy Matters

The starting Dasha balance is calculated from the Moon's position within its nakshatra. Birth time and location are inputs to that chart calculation; the effect of an input difference depends on the Moon's position relative to a nakshatra boundary and the calculation method. There is no universal four-minute threshold. If the recorded birth time is unknown, a noon estimate may not represent the actual chart.

Vimshottari Dasha FAQs

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. It is a 120-year cycle divided among 9 planets (called grahas), each ruling a specific period. The order is: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20 years), Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), and Mercury (17 years). Your current Dasha is determined by the Moon's nakshatra at birth.

How is Vimshottari Dasha calculated?

The starting point is your natal Moon's position in a nakshatra (lunar mansion). Each nakshatra is ruled by a specific planet, which determines your first Dasha planet. The balance of years in that first Dasha depends on how far the Moon had traveled through the nakshatra at birth. After the first Dasha completes, the remaining Dashas follow in the fixed Vimshottari sequence.

What is the difference between Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantar Dasha?

Mahadasha is the major planetary period (lasting years). Within each Mahadasha, each of the 9 planets rules a sub-period called Antardasha (lasting months to a few years). Within each Antardasha, there is a further sub-division called Pratyantar Dasha (lasting weeks to months). In traditional Jyotish, practitioners may interpret these nested periods together; this is a symbolic framework, not a reliable forecast of events.

How accurate is the Vimshottari Dasha system?

Vimshottari Dasha is a traditional Jyotish timing system, not an empirically validated way to predict events. Its calculated starting balance depends on the birth details and chart calculation method; input differences can affect chart-derived results. The app uses the astronomy implementation configured for its server and does not claim fixed arc-second accuracy.

Which Dasha period is the best?

No single Dasha is universally best or worst — it depends entirely on the planet's strength and placement in your individual chart. Jupiter Mahadasha is considered auspicious for most people since Jupiter is a natural benefic. Venus Mahadasha brings comforts and relationships. Saturn Mahadasha brings lessons but also long-lasting achievements. The actual results depend on the Dasha lord's dignity in your natal chart.

Can Vimshottari Dasha predict marriage?

Some Jyotish practitioners discuss Venus, the 7th house, dashas, and transits when interpreting relationship themes. These interpretations cannot reliably predict whether or when someone will marry, and should not determine relationship decisions.

Is there any other Dasha system besides Vimshottari?

Yes — there are over 40 Dasha systems in Vedic astrology. Other common ones include Ashtottari (108-year cycle, used when Rahu is in a specific position at birth), Yogini Dasha (36-year cycle), Chara Dasha (used in Jaimini astrology), and Kalachakra Dasha. My Kundli AI also supports Ashtottari Dasha calculation alongside Vimshottari.
