Understanding Dasha
The key to Vedic timing. Learn how planetary periods shape the chapters of your life.
What is the Dasha System?
The Dasha system is Vedic astrology's most powerful predictive tool. Unlike Western astrology which relies heavily on transits, Jyotish uses Dashas to time when specific planetary energies will manifest in your life.
Think of your birth chart as a photograph of potential. Dashas are the timer that activates different parts of that photograph at different times. When you enter a planet's Dasha, that planet's house rulerships, sign placement, and aspects become especially prominent in your life experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Dasha in Vedic astrology?
Dasha means 'planetary period' - a specific timeframe when a particular planet's energy dominates your life. The most common system, Vimshottari Dasha, divides life into 120 years across nine planetary periods.
How is my starting Dasha determined?
Your Dasha sequence begins based on your Moon's Nakshatra (birth star) at the moment of birth. The remaining balance of that Nakshatra's ruling planet's Dasha becomes your starting point.
What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?
Mahadasha is the main planetary period (e.g., Jupiter Mahadasha = 16 years). Antardasha is a sub-period within the Mahadasha. Further sub-divisions include Pratyantardasha and even finer levels.
Can Dasha predict exact events?
Dasha shows the general theme and energy of a period, not exact events. Combined with transits and divisional charts, experienced astrologers can narrow down timing, but free will always plays a role.
What happens during Rahu or Ketu Dasha?
Rahu Dasha (18 years) often brings worldly ambition, unconventional paths, and material pursuits. Ketu Dasha (7 years) tends toward spirituality, detachment, and past-life karma resolution.
